My name is Anthony, founder of Chronometer Check.
I started Chronometer Check in 2019 with one simple goal: to spread the message that great mechanical watches don’t have to be expensive.
As a child, I grew up watching my father wear a watch to work every day. Although it was a humble all-metal G-Shock, I understood wearing a watch as a sign of maturity and adulthood.
Fast forward to my high school graduation, when my parents gifted me a gold Fossil watch. This was my true entry to my love (and later addiction) for watches. I didn’t yet know the difference between a quartz or mechanical watch… But I did know that wearing that watch made me feel special.
When the crown of that gold Fossil broke and had to be sent in for repairs again, and again, and again, (yes, really) I knew it was time to do some research. I needed to buy a new watch.
On my hunt for a new watch, I discovered mechanical watches for the first time. I was shocked to find out three major things.
- The movement inside of a mechanical watch is powered by being wound, either by rotating the crown, or even by wearing it!
- These compact machines that are small enough to fit on your wrist didn’t even need a battery to function.
- Expensive luxury watches aren’t the only great watches on the market.
Growing up, I often heard of Rolex as the watch to strive for. While they’re certainly great, I later learned there are plenty of other great mechanical watch brands that exist – and offer much more affordable alternatives; Seiko, Citizen, and Orient, just to name a few.
I did some more research, and, well… Here I am, years later, with a collection of over 30+ watches, writing a blog post on my site about watches. Some call it an addiction. I call it a collection.
People believe mechanical watches need to be expensive. Fortunately, that’s not true.
Chronometer Check is a resource for lovers of mechanical watches who don’t want to spend an arm and a leg to be able to enjoy a great mechanical wristwatch. My mission is to share my love and passion for a hobby that has taught me so much about myself, with you.
